In the heart of Asheville, North Carolina, a concerning revelation has surfaced. Moms Across America, a nonprofit organization geared towards educating parents about the safety of food in the U.S, recently disclosed the results of their Fast Food Testing Program. As a nation that holds fast food close to its dietary heart, the findings are, to say the least, shocking.

Fast Food: A Beloved but Toxic Staple?

The program's core objective was to shed light on the presence of potential toxins in the meals provided by our favorite fast food joints. Alarmingly, every single sample out of the 21 popular fast food brands tested showed significant traces of cadmium and lead. Such metals, even in minuscule amounts, can wreak havoc on human health, particularly in children.

One might ask, why focus on fast food? The answer is simple: it forms a substantial portion of the American diet. A staggering 85 million Americans visit fast food restaurants daily. Furthermore, these chains play a vital role as major suppliers for school lunches – a meal that, for many underprivileged children, is the only significant meal they consume in a day.

The Depth of the Problem

The comprehensive testing spanned a vast spectrum, covering glyphosate (the world's most used herbicide), 203 agrochemicals, PFAS, phthalates, mineral content, and 160 heavy metals. The top ten brands underwent even more rigorous tests, which also included the assessment of commonly used veterinary drugs, hormones, and Vitamin B’s.

The results? Besides the omnipresence of cadmium and lead, there were substantial amounts of glyphosate and pesticides across all brands. The presence of veterinary drugs and hormones in the top ten fast food samples further paints a grim picture of the state of fast food in America.

The Hope for Change

Moms Across America is not just about pointing fingers but seeks tangible change. Zen Honeycutt, the founder of the organization, articulates this desire for a shift towards safer, toxin-free fast food. They're rallying for an overhaul of current farming practices, advocating for nontoxic, nutrient-rich food for all, especially the children.

While the primary source of heavy metals in our food chain is probably the fertilizers used in farming, proponents of regenerative organic agriculture believe that adopting such methods can drastically reduce such toxic inputs.
